How I Covered Rameshwaram in 12 Hours in Budget
Planning a trip to Rameshwaram can be overwhelming—the rituals, the timing, and the logistics often confuse first-time visitors. In this guide, I’m sharing my personal 1-day itinerary from Bangalore that covers everything from the 22 Theerthams to the edge of India at Dhanushkodi, all while staying within a budget.

How I Reached Rameshwaram from Bangalore
I took the UBL RMM Express (Train #07355) from Banaswadi in the afternoon. The train is quite convenient as it drops you directly at Rameshwaram station around 6:00 AM, giving you a full day to explore. If you are coming from Bangalore, this is the most cost-effective way to travel overnight.
Where Did I Stay? (The Best Budget Hack)
Finding a clean hotel near the temple can be hit-or-miss. I opted for the Railway Retiring Rooms.
Retiring Rooms at Rameshwaram Railway Station
Cost: ₹1235 for an AC Room.
Experience:
The room was surprisingly large, spacious, and the washroom was well-maintained. It served the purpose perfectly as I could freshen up by 9:00 AM and head straight to the temple rituals.
Step-by-Step Temple Process
Most people waste time wondering where to start. Here is the exact sequence I followed:
Step 1: Agni Theertham (The Sea Dip)
Located near the East gate, this is the first holy dip. It took me about 15 minutes.
Tip: Wear nylon clothes or a T-shirt/shorts; they dry quickly and are easier to manage than heavy cotton.
Step 2: The 22 Kund Kodi Theertham
Enter the North Gate (Ticket: ₹20). Do not change your wet clothes yet! You must walk through the 22 wells where temple staff pour buckets of holy water on you.
My Take: I initially wanted to skip this, but it ended up being the highlight of my trip. Don't miss it!
Step 3: Main Darshan
After the wells, we used a private locker near the North gate to keep our belongings and change into dry, traditional clothes. We opted for the ₹100 Special Entry Queue at the East gate. It was a lifesaver—we finished the main Darshan in just 20 minutes!
Dhanushkodi and Local Sightseeing
After a quick rest at the retiring room, we hired an auto-rickshaw for ₹1200. This is a standard rate for a 4-hour circuit including:
Rameshwaram Sigtseeing in Auto Rickshaw
- Vibhishana Temple: A peaceful spot with historical significance.
- Dhanushkodi: The ghost town ruins (Church and Station).
- Dhanushkodi Beach: The tip where two oceans meet.
- Local Gems: Lakshmana Temple, Hanuman Temple, and the mysterious Floating Stones.

Expert Tips for Your Visit
- Booking Retiring Rooms: Book at least 15-30 days in advance via the IRCTC Tourism website. They sell out fast!
- Clothing: Men usually need to wear a Dhoti or formal trousers (no lungis) for the inner sanctum. Women should wear Saree or Salwar Kameez.
- Food: There are many small messes near the East Gate serving authentic Tamil meals on banana leaves for under ₹120.
- Traveler Advice: If you are visiting in summer, finish Dhanushkodi by 11 AM or after 4 PM to avoid the blistering heat.
